Hypertrophic Scars and Keloid Formation

Hypertrophic scars and keloid formation occur when the body produces excess collagen tissue. Bay Harbour Med Spa’s specialty is providing expert skin care for Miami’s black population. Over many years, we have seen many of our black clientelle who either suffer from ingrown hairs, or keloids, also known as hypertrophic scars.

A hypertrophic is inappropritely large, red, raised, and hard. However, it remains confined to the wound’s edges and regresses in time. In contrast, a keloid is an even greater protrusion of scar tissue that extends beyond the wound’s edges and may form tumorlike masses. Keloids are permanent, without any tendency to reduce. People who have keloids often describe tenderness and pain to be associated with the development of this condition. Keloid formation may be hereditary.

Bay Harbour Med Spa receives phone calls asking if the Crystal Microdermabrasion TM treatments we offer to our Miami and Miami Beach clientelle can help them reduce keloids, in most case, no, our treatment cannot help reduce keloids. Often the scar tissue is so hard and so enlarged, that microdermabrasion treatments could not help. We caution you about surgeries as well, because if you have a keloid, you’re probably predisposed and may experience a regrowth.
