Acne Turmoil by Bay Harbour Med Spa

Teenage and adult acne continues to plague many throughout the world. Older acne treatment methods included tetracyclin which brought with it side effects such as suppresion of the immune system and gray teeh. Cleansing with alkaline bars of soap as well as alcohol based acne products were also recommended. The latter proved to be too harsh for the skin. Little was really known in the past about how to treat acne.

So what is the cause of acne?

Uneven hormonal levels are the root cause of all acne in human beings.  Bacteria known as P.acnes is the easiest form of bacteria to treat when tackling acne. In teens, the hypothalamus plays a role in activating acne as it’s radar is set off when a boy becomes a young man and a girl becomes a young woman. In adult women, stress factors such as having a baby or menonpause trigger acne in adults.

A little more about how hormones play a role in acne……………………..

When the hypothalamus gland relays the message of stress to the pituitary gland, the adrenals glands are set off. In turn, the adrenal glands get excited and in a way “over react.” This sets off an over production of testosterone, which has a direct line to the sebaceous oil glands in the skin. Guess what the sebaceous glands produce? Oil! The last thing a person’s skin needs is over stimulation of the oil glands. This excess sebum produced gets trapped under the skin, becomes isolated and produces pustules known as pimples.

Bay Harbour Med Spa has a number of skin treatments to help teens, men and women tackle the problem of acne. Our acne treatments are specifically formulated to treat your skin’s specific issue.

Ultrasoic Treatment To Help With C-Section Scarring

Certain physical traumas (even as mild as acne scarring) to the skin can cause scarring. Choosing the right treatment procedure can make a huge difference in the appearance and health of your skin. Our ultrasonic skin treatment (targeting the face, neck and decollete) utilizes a light microcurrent which enhances the skin’s cellular transformation, this allows the serums we use to penetrate under the skin and tackle any skin condition affecting you.

One of the serums we use in this treatment to penetrate your skin is stable vitamin c. This stimulates collagen production that is optimal for scar healing. In several of our clients, we noticed significant decrease in red or brown discoloration associated with c-section procedures that they’ve undergone.

Please note: no serum, lotion, cream of any kind should be applied to the c-section wound, until it fully closes, and/or the staples or dermabond have been removed.

Teen Skin Care

Dear reader,

We write this article on teen skin care in hopes that it will help you understand what exactly is going on with your body, face and overall skin care. If you feel this article is helpful, please pass it on to other teens as well.

Ok, so lets get to the topic of teen skin care issues. During the teenage years, your hormones explode out of control as your body’s chemistry begins to change. This usually appears as acne. Many of our teen clients who come in for acne facials in our Miami med spa (Bay Harbour Med Spa), often describe their facial acne as having a “pizza face,” or as one of our teen clients described her face, “pepperoni girl.” Actually, according to wikipedia, acne vulgaris (or acne) is a common human skin disease, characterized by areas of skin with seborrhea (scaly red skin), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), pustules (pimples), nodules (large papules) and possibly scarring.

What is the cause of acne?

In short, the cause of acne is the bacteria that lives in the skin’s pores. Although we always think of acne as being associated with the face, acne can occur anywhere on the body. In order to clear up and prevent outbreaks, first, avoid touching your face if you’ve not washed your hands. Second, DO NOT pick your face! Doing both cross-contaminates the bacteria found in the skin’s pores.

You should also seek out a  med spa (it does not have to be a fancy, or big med spa, a small one can sometimes be better than the fancy ones) which specializes in teen skin care, and particularly teen acne facials. TIP: Before going in, call them. Ask them how they extract pimples, blackheads and the like. If they say that they use their fingers, thank them, hang up, and look for another med spa which uses comedone extractors. We will explain what comedone extractors are shortly. First, you’re probably asking yourself, “what’s wrong with extracting (removing) pimples or black heads with the fingers?” Well, simple, it will promote acne scarring. Although it is much easier for an esthetician to use her fingers, it is not the proper method!

Comedone extractor is a tool that is helpful in removing blackheads and whiteheads. If used properly by a trained professional, you will not get any scarring from it.

Some basic steps (the acne facials we provide in our Miami located med spa is more involved, but these will do if you’re looking for acne facial outside of Miami or Miami Beach):

  1. Your skin should be prepped for a facial by removing dead surface skin cells and clearing out the pores.
  2. An exfoliant (should be derived from the enzymes of some sort of fruit) should be used to slough of the dead skin cells and open up the pores. Please note: we do  not believe in harsh salicylic acid products used on teen skin (or most acne prone skin), the are often too irritating and in some, may cause inflammation.
  3. Steaming
  4. Extraction with a comedone extractor.
  5. Some kind of drying mask (like camphor) should be applied to close up the blackheads and/or whiteheads which were just opened.

For maximum results, you should have a facial on a monthly basis. If you live in Miami, Miami Beach, Sunny Isles or Aventura, than please feel free to call us for a free consultation to discuss which teen or acne facial would be best suitable for you. If not, the information given to you above should be enough to arm you with information when seeking out a teen or acne facial in your home town.

Hypertrophic Scars and Keloid Formation

Copyright 2011. Bay Harbour Med Spa. All rights reserved.

Hypertrophic scars and keloid formation occur when the body produces excess collagen tissue. Bay Harbour Med Spa’s specialty is providing expert skin care for Miami’s black population. Over many years, we have seen many of our black clientelle who either suffer from ingrown hairs, or keloids, also known as hypertrophic scars.

A hypertrophic is inappropritely large, red, raised, and hard. However, it remains confined to the wound’s edges and regresses in time. In contrast, a keloid is an even greater protrusion of scar tissue that extends beyond the wound’s edges and may form tumorlike masses. Keloids are permanent, without any tendency to reduce. People who have keloids often describe tenderness and pain to be associated with the development of this condition. Keloid formation may be hereditary.

Bay Harbour Med Spa receives phone calls asking if the Crystal Microdermabrasion TM treatments we offer to our Miami and Miami Beach clientelle can help them reduce keloids, in most case, no, our treatment cannot help reduce keloids. Often the scar tissue is so hard and so enlarged, that microdermabrasion treatments could not help. We caution you about surgeries as well, because if you have a keloid, you’re probably predisposed and may experience a regrowth.
